"Tea and cakes – two of my favourite things – so what a treat it was to leaf through a beautifully presented book and immerse myself in the art and history of the afternoon tea ritual. Instead of plonking a tea bag into a chipped mug as you rush from one task to another, how lovely would it be if occasionally you got out your best china, put a tablecloth and flowers on a table and asked friends around for a relaxing afternoon. If you don’t know where to start, this book will tell you about the history of tea time, how to make a perfect brew and what food to serve. Over 200 enticing recipes for macarons and meringues, brownies, pastries, quiche, crumpets and all manner of delectable delights including classic cucumber sandwiches, potted shrimp and salmon mousse are supported by beautiful photographs. If tea isn’t your beverage of choice there are also recipes for hot chocolate, cinnamon iced coffee, green tea latte, lemonade and cordials. The recipes and ideas in this book would add style to any occasion. I received an advance copy of this book for review."

"My son couldn't get enough of this book when he was young. He wanted it read over and over again, and I was happy to do it for him, not only because it is so much fun to read, but also because it teaches so many good values. He's now 34 years old and a truly good man. Years later when I was teaching middle school remedial readers, I used this book to demonstrate to them how to add intonation and drama when reading a story. When it was their turn to give it a try, they all had such fun taking turns reading it aloud and laughing at their own efforts. The true joy of reading."

The Sneetches and Other Stories Dr Seuss Books Reviews

  • My son couldn't get enough of this book when he was young. The true joy of reading.
  • My all time favorite. This will teach your children about how silly it is to prejudge, discriminate and even to constantly demand more! more! MORE! I think it puts into a child's perspective, bullying, fairness, being nice, being equitable in our everyday relationships. To be more accepting of others and even ourselves as we are and not having to change ourselves to "fit in" with another's pre-conceived notions of who and what we should be.
  • One of my favorite books from my childhood. Now, as I read it to my 6 year old, I realize how impactful the lessons are from each of the stories. The Sneetches learn the value of living in a more accepting society and that you should not judge someone based on appearances but rather love them for who they are on the inside. (It also shows how easy it is for someone to take advantage of those that find their value only in their appearance.
The north and south going zax show us that being stubborn and inflexible will not let us grow and will keep us stuck as the world continues without us.
The green pants with no legs has a lesson about fear and empathy.
The mom with all the Dave’s.... well, that is pretty straightforward. It’s does show the value of stepping outside your box and being unique. Though really it just reminds us to not name all of our kids Dave because it will cause so much trouble in the long run. The random alternate name suggestions are still funny.
Overall, it’s still a fun read and a great opportunity to open up important conversations with your kids.
  • The Sneetches and Other Stories is fantastic reading for your child. It's not just that excellent first story in the title, but also three others that range from fun to thoughtful.

The Sneetches is about creatures who separate into two groups based on appearance. With the star-bellied Sneetches looking down on the non-star-bellied Sneetches, tension builds...until in walks an entrepreneur who can instantly erase the differences with a "star-on" machine. I've heard reviewers crank about this story being pro-welfare, or liberal propaganda, but the lesson is more about prejudice, and while I won't spoil the story for you, there is a very P.T. Barnum-styled ending that helps the Sneetches realize that snap judgements lead to blinding one to what matters.

The story "The Zax" is another blindered example where two creatures hate each other so much they let life pass them by. The rest of the world moves on, while they can't seem to get over their mutual dislike of each other. This story is very short.

Then we have "Too Many Daves". Hilarious and silly, this is practically a short two-page poem, all about a mother who made the mistake of naming all of her children Dave. My daughter was always delighted when I read this story because of all the silly words in it.

Which brings us to the unsung gem at the end of "The Sneetches and Other Stories" the tale "What Was I Afraid Of?" Dealing with a child's fear of the unknown, this spooky little tale resolves itself sweetly, and I really enjoy the way Dr. Seuss shows a child that perhaps with a bit of determination, one might find that one's fears and anxieties really aren't so bad after all. The fact that the main character is afraid of a pair of green pants is silly enough that a child can instantly grasp that there are reasonable fears...and then there are unreasonable ones.

Whatever stories you choose to read, read to your child. You will see a huge difference in their learning, because you took the time to be with them and encouraged them. I loved The Sneetches and Other Stories because its lessons to me are the sorts of things every child should learn about dealing with others and with themselves.
  • This is a excellent book that teaches simple morals and life lessons that are easy to understand and identifiable. The first story teaches about pride and envy and how you can end up unhappy and broke if you let those govern your life. In the end they learn that one is no better than the other. The next book is about being stubborn and how you can waste a lot of time being stubborn. The third book is silly and refers to having many kids named very unique names and then regretting it. The last book is my favorite. I have read it to my boys many many times and they love it too. It has a creature who is scared of a pair of empty pants. He is afraid of them not because they are sinister or malicious, but because they are so very different from him and he has never seen something like it before. I won't elaborate any more other than to say we really enjoy this book.
  • No dimensions listed or photo showing scale. Turned out to be very small with tiny print inside. Especially difficult to read when some of the text is black over a dark background. We have to turn the lights way up, not good for bedtime or my eyes. Still giving two stars because the book itself was in great shape, the shipping was fast, and the stories are great. Just disappointed in the actual product dimensions. I'll probably pick up a bigger copy when I find it for a good price.
  • This is one of the best and most important Dr. Seuss books of all time because it helps to socialize children into understanding the psychology of social class, tribalism, racism, etc.. That their sense of self worth/esteem should not be dominated by the social constructs of others.

Lonely Planet Belize Travel Guide Lonely Planet Alex Egerton Paul Harding Daniel C Schechter 9781786571106 Books Reviews

  • I almost exclusively rely on Lonely Planet books for my international travel-- and this book is no exception. The information on here helped us out tremendously on our recent trip-- it even gave us a good baseline for the cost of renting a golf cart in Ambergris Caye!

This is the most recent release of their Belize version, and it's pretty spot on. I know it's tempting to purchase an out-of-date copy, but it's generally worth the extra money to get the current one.
  • This is a great guide to Belize. It provides terrific, detailed information about each region, plus part of neighboring Guatemala. I knew practically nothing about Belize before reading it, so I was very happy to learn about the differences among the different regions, particularly with regard to how big the crowds are and how heavily developed they are. We prefer less touristy destinations, so that was great information for us. I'm very happy with this book.
  • Better than Fodors and we used them both on our latest trip.
  • Love Lonley Planet and this book is just what I was expecting and looking for. It has information broken down by region, then within a specific section has things broken down by activities, food and places to stay. It even has suggested itineraries for different amounts of days in country. Would always recommend.
  • this guide was most helpful in finding our way around Belize for the first time. there were very good tips on places to go, areas to see, and food spots. Thank you Lonely Planet.
  • I wanted a book that covered the whole country, not just the tourist places. I love this book. I learned that there were even more archelogical sites than I knew about. I hope I get to use it someday.
  • Would like more details on scuba, snorkeling, beaches
  • This guide is very deficient. You can very likely plan a better trip just on Google. It doesn't help you to eatimate the time you need in different places, It states very few prices (and Belize seems very stable pricewise). Information in general is very limited. And it's a guide on Belize only! Based on my experience in this trip I will consider a different guide for the next one.

Rosie is a woman happy in her own skin good job, great friends, enjoyable lifestyle filled with sports, dance, music. She's even managed to buy her own home before turning thirty, an uncommon feat for single women in the 1970's. In short, Rosie's a pretty good package. She meets Carl, whose charms, wit and dynamism appear the perfect wrapping, the crowning touch to the life that she's built so far. Within months of their wedding, Rosie realizes she's entangled with a frequently unemployed, dishonest, alcoholic, ultimately violent conman. By subtle and calculated design, Carl manages to rip Rosie's package apart he cuts her off from friends and family, he curtails her usual lifestyle, he manages to lose her house, and he changes Rosie from a vivacious, confident woman to a sniveling, vacillating doormat. Rosie knows she must extricate herself from his control--something, Rosie finds out, is far easier said than done. This cautionary tale should especially appeal to the 20- or 30-something woman (although anyone involved in a toxic relationship can relate). In this memoir, told from forty years of retrospect, the author shares her own version of "Sleeping with the Enemy" with self-deprecation, exasperation, terror, and compassion.

"I read the complete story in one day! It is an honest and disturbing account of a relationship gone bad. This happened to a smart, strong, independent woman and she describes in detail how horrific it was. Definitely deserves 5 stars!"

Confused A True Story of Flawed Love Control and Abuse Susan K Green Books Reviews

  • Opening this book is like stepping into a conversation with a dear friend, one that you wish only the best for. The note to the reader, and the beginning were intriguing. The book is filled with many great lines and phrases such as “memories forgotten, repressed, or misunderstood.” Throughout the book, Susan's word-choices are spot on, making her love of the South shine through the horror of life with an abuser.
I appreciated the gradually building tension, and the hope and dreams of the main character building steadily through the chapters. Susan is a master of the quiet statement with huge impact while at the same time not shying away from revealing intimate details that make the story come alive.
  • “Don’t take candy from strangers” is a lesson taken to heart by our innocent children thereby saving them from a monster’s entrapment. Needed is a lesson for guileless young women who are offered candy in the form of entertainment and who thereby become entrapped by a different kind of monster. “Confused”, a book by new author, Susan Green, offers just that lesson.
Her story is a mesmerizing good read (GREAT READ) in a “can’t put down” format. I found her chapter headings original and tempting (much like candy!) and was never disappointed in the reading of the chapter that followed.
"Confused" is a walk back into the universally shared experiences of the search for true love. Beware of the pitfalls, Susan shows us the signs.
Ordinarily, I end my days with a 30-minute read before falling asleep; however, Susan’s story stretched my bedtime reading threefold.
She calls her book a cautionary tale, I call it a blockbuster book.
  • Sue K was keeping her fellow classmates in stitches as a young teenager in Birmingham years ago - and even after enduring a relationship with a monster, she tells her story for the most part in an upbeat humorous way.
As a piano player (not pianist) I was secretly pulling for that Baby Grand, not go the way of the cups and ashtrays. I found CONFUSED by chance, and although I've been gone from Alabama almost 50 years, when I realized it was written by a "Valley Girl," (not the kind you might know about it) buying this book and reading immediately was a forgone conclusion.
  • This is a well written, concise story of a woman in a disastrous relationship 40 years ago. I read the book in the shortest period of time of any book I can remember. The events and the main character Rosie's thoughts, are clear. Some of her decisions might surprise you.
The Epilogue is perfect. The author lists her thoughts of why she allowed this relationship to happen. If this had occurred today, this would have possibly been a different story. I highly recommend this book.
  • 5 Stars - Excellent -- While reading this true story, I was right there beside Rosie; however, I couldn't reach out to help her. Readers will also find themselves wanting to offer comfort and advice as they are enveloped in Rosie's life. After finishing this real-life story, those who have lived at least a portion of Rosie's story will benefit from her honesty and determination in dealing with the unbelievable situations in which they have found themselves. Rosie is a survivor. I truly hope other women are also.
  • Write what you know. In Susan Greene’s retelling of her abusive marriage, Rosie’s relationship with Tony, a controlling con man, rings with absolute, heartbreaking authenticity. Raw, unflencingly honest and redemptive, it should be on every twenty something’s reading list. Rosie’s story is one you think could never happen to you, your daughter or some one you know but that is simply not true! How can something that seemed right go so wrong ? Rosie comes to realize she must find her way out of her toxic marriage to a man with many faces and all of them lies.
  • I read the complete story in one day! It is an honest and disturbing account of a relationship gone bad. This happened to a smart, strong, independent woman and she describes in detail how horrific it was. Definitely deserves 5 stars!
  • Well written and interesting. More stories like this need to be told. It's real life to so many.

The Art and Making of Aladdin Emily Zemler 9781683836827 Books Reviews

  • I was hoping this book would be an exhaustive look at the production design of the live action Aladdin film and feature a lot of concept art from early sketches to final paintings, like the outstanding "Art of" books for the latest Star Wars films. This book is nothing like those. A large portion of this fairly thin book (155p) are populated with production photos of actors in costume or sets. There are some decent concept paintings throughout, but without much description and little of the progressive visual development of things of what should be a visually resplendent movie. For example, there is not one piece of concept art for the Genie in the book, just 3-4 production stills. So we learn nothing of early ideas for the Genie and how the ideas for the character progressed through art. That's nuts.

Since I'm interested in production design, I felt this book had way too much fluff (light narrative and production stills) and not enough artwork. If I had known, I wouldn't have paid pre-sale price for the book.

It's not terrible, but not nearly as good as an Aladdin "art of" book should have easily been.

HOW TO BE A MORE GRATEFUL AND A HAPPY PERSON

Sometimes life gets out of control – you are juggling a million things at once while trying to keep your head above water and make it look like you have everything under control. In the midst of the chaos, it’s easy to lose your sense of self  and peace and forget who you truly are.

So many of us  have allowed stress-induced thoughts to  take control of us. This is where we never measure up and have lost our self being.

But journaling helped me break out of that never ending rut. My thoughts, feelings and memories flow through the ink-filled pages. In this amazing process, I have not only taken control of my emotions, but I have discovered so much about myself.

Gratitude journaling has helped me work through a lot of tough times in my life and it continues to help me grow into a better version of myself.

Gratitude is a choice. Choose to be grateful! It starts with you. Set yourself up for more happiness by choosing to be grateful each day. It doesn't come naturally but it can be done when developed and cultivated as a habit. This will help you develop and attitude of gratitude.

Make giving thanks a daily habit. You will be so much happier and even-tempered a few months down the road if you are more thankful. Studies have shown that even the 2-Minute-Routine of jotting down 3 things to be grateful for each day will make you a happier person!

And oh the benefits of being happy are endless...

This journal contains an inspirational quote every week and every day has space to write 3 things you are thankful for.

There is a slightly different prompt for everyday to help you brainstorm. This helps you stay on track even if you're in a hurry.

Cultivating an attitude of gratitude yields many benefits physical, mental and spiritual. If you start each day by writing down three things you are thankful for - a good cup of coffee, the smell of rain, starting a good book - you begin each day on the right note.

In this Journal, you have flexibility to write down the dates of entry and not feel guilty if you miss a day. There are also pages in this journal where you can just draw something beautiful or color the inspiring pages. Every other page contains an inspirational quote (non religious).

Do it daily and make it a habit to focus on the blessings you have been given! Grab a copy for a friend and share the journey together! Accountability really helps and makes it even more fun as well as easier to stick to.

From the bestselling author of Alias Grace and the MaddAddam trilogy, here is the #1 New York Times bestseller and seminal work of speculative fiction from the Booker Prize-winning author.

Now a Hulu series starring Elizabeth Moss, Samira Wiley, and Joseph Fiennes. Includes a new introduction by Margaret Atwood.

Look for The Testaments, the sequel to The Handmaid’s Tale, coming September 2019.

Offred is a Handmaid in the Republic of Gilead. She may leave the home of the Commander and his wife once a day to walk to food markets whose signs are now pictures instead of words because women are no longer allowed to read. She must lie on her back once a month and pray that the Commander makes her pregnant, because in an age of declining births, Offred and the other Handmaids are valued only if their ovaries are viable.

Offred can remember the days before, when she lived and made love with her husband Luke; when she played with and protected her daughter; when she had a job, money of her own, and access to knowledge. But all of that is gone now….

Funny, unexpected, horrifying, and altogether convincing, The Handmaid's Tale is at once scathing satire, dire warning, and literary tour de force.

"There was so much great hype about the television series that I was eager to read the book. Very interesting story. But I was greatly disappointed that the ending was full of holes. The main character had to guard her every thought, yet the ending reveals the story is being told based on her diary. Even if she'd had writing materials, which she didn't, she'd never have dared write down her thoughts and risk the results of exposure. Big let down."

The Handmaid Tale Margaret Atwood 9780385490818 Books Reviews :

The Handmaid Tale Margaret Atwood 9780385490818 Books Reviews

  • I realize that I am late coming to the ‘Handmaid’ party. It has been my intention to read it for some long time, but for some reason that I don’t fully understand, I was intimidated by the gravity of the book. I really wanted to be impressed, but Atwood’s view of a dark dystopian society left me depressed, confused and ultimately bored.
I confess, I couldn’t finish the book. I couldn’t force myself to endure more than 115 pages peppered with complete and unnecessary gibberish. ‘If I have an egg, what more can I want?’ There are tons of this fluff.
Atwood’s view of the future, and I assume that’s what I think we must consider that she intends, is poppycock. A nightmare with no beginning, middle or end. If this is what is in store for us, count me out.
I was interested in a storyline or two along the way, but the author refused to develop them, instead droning on and on about meaningless details in the heroine’s life, or existence.
I couldn’t go any further. My mind kept drifting to all the really entertaining stories out there, waiting to be read and enjoyed. Why was I wasting precious time reading tripe?
  • Perfect last line to this book as I was left with so many questions at the end...the first of which was simply, "Huh?".

This book confused me. Given all of the hype around it, I was expecting much more from this book. It was decent and I can completely understand how it would translate well into a mini-series or movie...but I just couldn't get my head around how/why things changed so quickly in society...over night, all women's rights were taken away but there seemed to be little information as to who or why. I was further confused by tourists coming into Gilead...why were there fully functioning societies outside of Gilead that seem to have been unaffected by whatever caused this tremendous shift in US society. How could this have gone on for so long afterwards without a civil war of sorts breaking out. Without having more information of the total collapse of society and a little more longevity of what lead to the collapse, it was hard to buy into this tale.

If I could buy into the collapse of society and the development of Gilead to save the human race, there just wasn't enough information on how the Handmaids, the Aunts, etc were chosen, why they took healthy children away from their birth families and assigned the mothers of those children to other households for procreation...none of it made much sense. Also, what happened to the women in the colonies, the "unbabies", etc.

There was a great core to this story, just not enough detail to support any of it so I was very disappointed in the end.
  • I first read The Handmaid's Tale around the time it was published in 1986. I was just 22, a sheltered young thing. I recall wondering what everyone was raving about, since only the top story layer of the book connected for me. Now, with decades of life experience behind me, I see that this is a deeply moving, complex book. I'm so glad I decide to read again just at this moment in time.

You would think that something written thirty years ago would seem dated. But that wasn't the case for me. If anything, I think there are so many things imagined in the book which have become more possible today instead of less. In a sense, this is a cautionary tale that a large art of the population ignored or misunderstood.

More than ever, we should be reading this and sharing it with the young women in our lives. And discussing it with them, so they see more of the depth than my 22-year-old self did.

Margaret Atwood imagined a world where a totalitarian power went into action against foreign zealots and their own people's "wanton" behavior. This power was meant to make the world better, but it also created a world of highly distinct "haves" and "have nots."

She says, “Better never means better for everyone... It always means worse, for some.” It might be just me (although I suspect not) but this sure sounds like what we often hear today on the news and in conversations.

Reading this at the end of 2016 after a brutal election cycle, the following quote from Atwood seems both wise and horrible. Have we not been hearing about people who feel invisible?

“We were the people who were not in the papers. We lived in the blank white spaces at the edges of print. It gave us more freedom. We lived in the gaps between the stories"

Atwood's Republic of Gilead gives people one-dimensional functions. Correction - she gives women one-dimensional functions. They are Wives, Marthas, Handmaids, Aunts, or Unwomen (and a few more which would be spoilers). Unwomen are rebels, likely to be banished to the toxic waste dumps of the colonies. Everyone else plays a part in the singular female focus - procreation. As I read, I wondered what category I'd fall into should I have the bad luck to land in Gilead. The women there have no layers of life or experience. They are expected only to fulfill their narrow role.

Why is procreation such a focus? Because of falling birth rates among white people. This book doesn't discuss race except one small spot near the end. It's as if there is only one race in Gilead. And the only people in that race with any power are men.

The main character, Offred (literally of Fred named after the Commander she serves) is the perfect blend of weak and strong. She tells us of her past and says, “When we think of the past it's the beautiful things we pick out. We want to believe it was all like that.” But her life is not beautiful. And Atwood straddles the line of past and present, sending back and forth in a way that keeps you wanting more. Just as Offred wants more. Just as we all want more for ourselves and the generations of women coming after us.

If you read this book long ago, pick it up again. If you haven't yet read it, move it up to the top of your TBR. Buy it for friends. Buy for your sons and daughters. Use it to teach and to learn what kind of world we could be if we stop valuing the diversity of all people.
  • There was so much great hype about the television series that I was eager to read the book. Big let down.
  • Very anti-religious,anti-men and depressing book. PBS had it in their top 100. I can't figure out why. Would not recommend.
  • I have to admit while parts of this novel where intriguing, most of it, I found difficult get through. The beginning until half way through was quite boring and if it hadn't been a required text for class I would've dropped it. On the other hand it was different and lacked the cliche main character that fights for freedom and justice, but then again that's the kind of character I like. I do recommend trying it for yourself as it wasn't a terrible read. I loved the ending though. It was open ended leaving you able to create an ending that you would like to have happened.
