Rosie is a woman happy in her own skin good job, great friends, enjoyable lifestyle filled with sports, dance, music. She's even managed to buy her own home before turning thirty, an uncommon feat for single women in the 1970's. In short, Rosie's a pretty good package. She meets Carl, whose charms, wit and dynamism appear the perfect wrapping, the crowning touch to the life that she's built so far. Within months of their wedding, Rosie realizes she's entangled with a frequently unemployed, dishonest, alcoholic, ultimately violent conman. By subtle and calculated design, Carl manages to rip Rosie's package apart he cuts her off from friends and family, he curtails her usual lifestyle, he manages to lose her house, and he changes Rosie from a vivacious, confident woman to a sniveling, vacillating doormat. Rosie knows she must extricate herself from his control--something, Rosie finds out, is far easier said than done. This cautionary tale should especially appeal to the 20- or 30-something woman (although anyone involved in a toxic relationship can relate). In this memoir, told from forty years of retrospect, the author shares her own version of "Sleeping with the Enemy" with self-deprecation, exasperation, terror, and compassion.

"I read the complete story in one day! It is an honest and disturbing account of a relationship gone bad. This happened to a smart, strong, independent woman and she describes in detail how horrific it was. Definitely deserves 5 stars!"

Confused A True Story of Flawed Love Control and Abuse Susan K Green Books Reviews

  • Opening this book is like stepping into a conversation with a dear friend, one that you wish only the best for. The note to the reader, and the beginning were intriguing. The book is filled with many great lines and phrases such as “memories forgotten, repressed, or misunderstood.” Throughout the book, Susan's word-choices are spot on, making her love of the South shine through the horror of life with an abuser.
I appreciated the gradually building tension, and the hope and dreams of the main character building steadily through the chapters. Susan is a master of the quiet statement with huge impact while at the same time not shying away from revealing intimate details that make the story come alive.
  • “Don’t take candy from strangers” is a lesson taken to heart by our innocent children thereby saving them from a monster’s entrapment. Needed is a lesson for guileless young women who are offered candy in the form of entertainment and who thereby become entrapped by a different kind of monster. “Confused”, a book by new author, Susan Green, offers just that lesson.
Her story is a mesmerizing good read (GREAT READ) in a “can’t put down” format. I found her chapter headings original and tempting (much like candy!) and was never disappointed in the reading of the chapter that followed.
"Confused" is a walk back into the universally shared experiences of the search for true love. Beware of the pitfalls, Susan shows us the signs.
Ordinarily, I end my days with a 30-minute read before falling asleep; however, Susan’s story stretched my bedtime reading threefold.
She calls her book a cautionary tale, I call it a blockbuster book.
  • Sue K was keeping her fellow classmates in stitches as a young teenager in Birmingham years ago - and even after enduring a relationship with a monster, she tells her story for the most part in an upbeat humorous way.
As a piano player (not pianist) I was secretly pulling for that Baby Grand, not go the way of the cups and ashtrays. I found CONFUSED by chance, and although I've been gone from Alabama almost 50 years, when I realized it was written by a "Valley Girl," (not the kind you might know about it) buying this book and reading immediately was a forgone conclusion.
  • This is a well written, concise story of a woman in a disastrous relationship 40 years ago. I read the book in the shortest period of time of any book I can remember. The events and the main character Rosie's thoughts, are clear. Some of her decisions might surprise you.
The Epilogue is perfect. The author lists her thoughts of why she allowed this relationship to happen. If this had occurred today, this would have possibly been a different story. I highly recommend this book.
  • 5 Stars - Excellent -- While reading this true story, I was right there beside Rosie; however, I couldn't reach out to help her. Readers will also find themselves wanting to offer comfort and advice as they are enveloped in Rosie's life. After finishing this real-life story, those who have lived at least a portion of Rosie's story will benefit from her honesty and determination in dealing with the unbelievable situations in which they have found themselves. Rosie is a survivor. I truly hope other women are also.
  • Write what you know. In Susan Greene’s retelling of her abusive marriage, Rosie’s relationship with Tony, a controlling con man, rings with absolute, heartbreaking authenticity. Raw, unflencingly honest and redemptive, it should be on every twenty something’s reading list. Rosie’s story is one you think could never happen to you, your daughter or some one you know but that is simply not true! How can something that seemed right go so wrong ? Rosie comes to realize she must find her way out of her toxic marriage to a man with many faces and all of them lies.
  • I read the complete story in one day! It is an honest and disturbing account of a relationship gone bad. This happened to a smart, strong, independent woman and she describes in detail how horrific it was. Definitely deserves 5 stars!
  • Well written and interesting. More stories like this need to be told. It's real life to so many.
