- I was hoping this book would be an exhaustive look at the production design of the live action Aladdin film and feature a lot of concept art from early sketches to final paintings, like the outstanding "Art of" books for the latest Star Wars films. This book is nothing like those. A large portion of this fairly thin book (155p) are populated with production photos of actors in costume or sets. There are some decent concept paintings throughout, but without much description and little of the progressive visual development of things of what should be a visually resplendent movie. For example, there is not one piece of concept art for the Genie in the book, just 3-4 production stills. So we learn nothing of early ideas for the Genie and how the ideas for the character progressed through art. That's nuts.
Since I'm interested in production design, I felt this book had way too much fluff (light narrative and production stills) and not enough artwork. If I had known, I wouldn't have paid pre-sale price for the book.
It's not terrible, but not nearly as good as an Aladdin "art of" book should have easily been.
